The Eastern Region of NATS
National Association of Teachers of Singing, Inc.
The Eastern Region Conference at Indiana University of Pennsylvania was a big success. Dr. Robert Peavler and his colleagues, Dr. Sarah Mantel and Dr. Mary Logan Hastings, organized a wonderful three days of singing, workshops, master classes and recital.
Most importantly, we heard wonderful singing from many students -- it was most enjoyable to hear each and every one stand and sing at his or her best.
Dr. Jerrold Pope, Chair of Voice at Boston University, gave a wonderfully insightful master class on vocal technique. Dr. Mary Logan Hastings shared her extensive knowledge of German language and literature in a Lieder master class.
Joan VanDyke and Rob Gretta of IUP led students and teachers alike in Movement and Improvisation Workshops.
Dr. Clark A. Rosen, Director of the UPMC Voice Center and associate professor of otolaryngology, with his colleague, Dr. Jackie Gartner-Schmidt, Associate Director of the UPMC Voice Center, gave a very informative and interesting presentation on care and hygiene for the professional voice user.
And finally, we all thrilled to the music-making of Jennifer Trost and Arlene Shrut in a beautiful recital of songs by Debussy, Judith Cloud and Berg -- a great inspiration to us all.
Thank you to all who participated, teachers and students alike!
Congratulations to all who participated in the Eastern Region Conference Auditions!
